Feline Diabetes Insulin Injection

Insulin injections should be given immediately after your cat has eaten their meal. Feeding your cat two meals approximately 12 hours apart will make regulating the blood glucose easier for you and your pet.

Step 1:

Identify your insulin and syringe.

Step 2:

Gently roll the insulin between your two hands to mix it. Do not shake it.
Draw up the appropriate volume of insulin determined by your veterinarian into the syringe.

Step 3:

Hold the syringe in your dominant hand and remove the cap. Keep the bevel (needle hole) upright.

Step 4:

Pick an area of the skin (ideally over the ribs) to inject. Change injection sites each dosage. For difficult cats, injecting between the shoulder blades is acceptable.

Step 5:

Tent the skin (as seen in the picture) and poke the needle through the skin. A quick, decisive, poke is going to be the most comfortable for the cat.

Step 6:

Pull back on the plunger. If there is no blood, push the plunger to inject the insulin. If there is blood, take the needle out and try again.

Step 7:

Take the syringe out and carefully recap the needle.

Step 8:

Praise your cat and reward them with a small treat and attention.

Step 9:

Return the insulin bottle to the fridge and dispose of the syringe safely.
